How the numbers are worked out
Cats: the first year counts as about 15 human years, the second adds 9, and each year after adds 4. Life stages follow the widely used kitten, junior, prime, mature, senior, and geriatric groupings.
Dogs: the first year counts as about 15 human years and the second adds 9. After that we use a commonly published size-based chart for small (up to 20 lb), medium (21 to 50 lb), large (51 to 90 lb), and giant (over 90 lb) dogs. Ages between whole years are estimated by blending neighbouring values. Senior ages by size are approximate: about 10 for small dogs, 7 for medium, 6 for large, and 5 for giant.
These are averages drawn from commonly cited veterinary guidance and published age charts. Different sources vary slightly, especially for giant breeds, so treat every result as an estimate.
